6 Powerful Things to Write on a Bay Leaf for Manifestation

Intention that is written on a bay leaf.

In 2018, I stumbled across a YouTube video about manifestation techniques that introduced me to something I’d never heard of before: writing your desires on a bay leaf and burning it.

For reasons I couldn’t fully explain at the time, this ritual immediately resonated with me. It felt simple yet powerful, so I decided to make it part of my manifestation practice.

Looking back, I’m so glad I did. Since incorporating this ritual, I’ve seen my intentions come to life in ways that still amaze me: landing a remote job, earning my first six figures, achieving sobriety, and finally making career moves I’d been putting off for years. It was as if I’d unlocked a new level of alignment.

The act of writing my intentions on a bay leaf and burning it became a way to stay focused and connected to what I truly wanted. It grounded me and gave me clarity, even on days when life felt out of control.

What I’ve come to realize is that there’s something transformative about taking your desires out of your head and putting them into the physical world. The bay leaf became a symbol of that process. A tangible reminder of my intentions and a way to stay aligned with them, no matter what.

That’s why I love this ritual. I love the energy it brings, so I can stay aligned with my desires, even when distractions arise.

If you’re ready to try this for yourself, here are six things you can write on your bay leaf and how to make each one truly meaningful.

Six powerful intentions you can write on a bay leaf during a manifestation ritual.

1- Your desire or goal

Write a wish on your bay leaf.

Start with what you really want and don’t hold back or play it safe. Be honest and specific.

Writing your goal down on a bay leaf helps your brain stay focused on it, even when life gets busy or distracting. When you write it on a bay leaf, burn it, and repeat the next day, you’re creating a habit that keeps your goal top of mind and helps it grow stronger over time.

The more specific you are, the better. A goal like “more money” is too vague to work with. But “$5,000 in new income this month”? That’s clear and gives your brain something to aim for. The clearer your goal, the more real it feels, and that’s where everything starts.

2 – Your unresolved questions

We all carry questions that weigh on us. What’s my next step? Am I on the right path? What do I really want? These questions loop endlessly in our minds, keeping us awake at night and crowding out everything else.

Writing a question on a bay leaf takes it out of your head and puts it into the physical world. That simple act of externalizing it creates space between you and the noise. And in that space, clarity has room to emerge.

The way you ask the question matters. A question like, “Should I quit my job?” feels like a wall—closed and limiting. But, “What would building income on my own terms look like?” opens up a door of possibilities. Choose the version of the question that invites your mind to explore, not shut down.

  1. Burn it and stay open. Over the next few days, don’t force an answer. Clarity often comes in unexpected ways—a conversation, a thought in the shower, or a quiet moment when everything clicks. Trust that the answer will find you.
  2. Place it under your pillow. The bay leaf is perfect for this since it’s small, simple, and fits easily under your pillow. Before you sleep, take a moment to look at the question. Read it slowly, then repeat it in your mind as you drift off. This signals your subconscious to start working on it while you rest. Your subconscious is powerful, and it connects ideas and uncovers insights in ways your waking mind can’t. Many people wake up with a sense of clarity they didn’t have the night before.

Let the question guide you, not overwhelm you. The answers are closer than you think.

3 – Your Intention

A goal is about what you want to achieve, whereas an intention is about who you choose to be while working toward it.

This distinction is more important than most people realize. You can check off every goal on your list and still feel unfulfilled if the way you’ve been showing up doesn’t align with the person you truly want to be. Intentions keep you grounded in the how, not just the what.

Write your intention on a bay leaf and place it somewhere you’ll see it often, like on your mirror, your desk, or tucked inside your journal. Let it serve as a quiet, daily reminder of the standard you’re holding yourself to.

Here are some examples:

  • I choose to lead with patience today.
  • I choose to trust the process, even when I can’t see the full picture.
  • I choose to protect my peace and my energy.
  • I choose to receive with gratitude and ease.
  • I choose to be fully present in every conversation.

Notice that none of these intentions is about external achievements. They’re about how you move through your day, how you show up, and how you align with the person you want to be. That’s the power of an intention. It’s not about the destination, but the way you walk the path.

Writing your intention for the day, week, month, or even year is a great way to use a bay leaf. Write down your intention on the leaf, and then keep it somewhere safe to refer to it whenever you need a reminder.

4. An affirmation

Affirmations are a way to guide your mind toward the version of yourself you are becoming. They plant seeds of belief that grow stronger with repetition.

When you write an affirmation on a bay leaf, carry it with you, burn it, or rewrite it the next day, you are reinforcing that belief in your subconscious. Each time you engage with it, you shape your thoughts and align with your intentions.

Write your affirmation in the present tense and from a first-person perspective. Here are some examples:

  • I am worthy of the life I’m building.
  • Money flows to me freely and frequently.
  • I am a magnet for aligned opportunities.
  • I am healthy, whole, and expanding.
  • Everything I need is already on its way to me.

Choose or create an affirmation that feels deeply personal and meaningful to you. The more it resonates, the more power it holds to support your growth and transformation.

5. Calling in love or connection

Instead of focusing on a specific person, focus on the kind of love or connection you want to invite into your life. What you’re truly seeking is not tied to one individual. It is about a feeling. It is about being chosen, being seen, and being part of something real, reciprocal, and worthy of your energy.

When you write the feeling instead of a name, you allow yourself to receive that connection in a way that might exceed your expectations. You are not limiting your possibilities. You are setting a clear standard for what you deserve.

Here are some examples:

  • I choose a love that is reciprocal, peaceful, and full.
  • I choose relationships that pour into me as much as I pour into them.
  • I choose to attract people who align with who I am becoming.
  • I choose a partnership built on trust, ease, and genuine connection.

Hold the bay leaf in your hand and take a moment to connect with what you have written. Feel the truth of it. Then either burn the leaf to release your intention or keep it somewhere visible as a reminder of the standard you have set for yourself.

6. A Specific Number

Numbers bring clarity. When goals feel distant or unclear, a specific number makes them real, measurable, and easy to focus on.

This number could represent anything you are working toward. It might be a financial goal, a savings milestone, a follower count, a target date, a number of clients, a weight, or even the number of days you have committed to a new habit. Whatever it is, write it down to make it tangible.

If it feels helpful, pair the number with a timeframe. Write the number on one side of the bay leaf and the date on the other. Or keep it simple with just the number, clear and bold.

You can also get creative with it and write the number multiple times.

Place the bay leaf somewhere you will see it often. Pin it to your wall, tuck it into your planner, or set it on your desk. The purpose is not to fixate on it but to keep it present in your mind as a quiet reminder of what you are working toward.

What Should You Use To Write On Your Bay Leaf?

A regular pen works. But I use a Sharpie every time, and I’d recommend it. The ink is bold, it doesn’t smudge, and when the leaf burns, your words stay visible all the way through, which is a small thing that makes the whole ritual feel more intentional.

You can also use color intentionally. Each color carries its own energy, and choosing one that matches what you’re writing adds another layer to the practice:

  • Green: money, abundance, growth, new beginnings
  • Red: love, passion, desire, romantic connection
  • Blue: communication, clarity, speaking your truth
  • Purple: intuition, spiritual connection, higher guidance
  • Gold or Yellow: success, confidence, recognition
  • Black: protection, grounding, releasing what no longer serves you
  • Pink: self-love, friendship, heart-centered intentions

Whatever you choose, slow down when you write. Your handwriting is a physical act of intention. Don’t rush it.

How To Burn Your Bay Leaf

Burning the bay leaf is a way to release your intention. It is the moment you let go of trying to control the outcome and trust the process. You have done your part by getting clear, making a choice, and writing it down. Now it is time to let it go.

Start by reading what you wrote one more time. Take a moment to feel it fully, not just in your mind but in your body.

Light the tip of the bay leaf over a fireproof dish, small bowl, or candle holder. Let it burn completely. Allow the process to unfold naturally without rushing or interrupting it.

As the leaf burns, focus on releasing your hold on how and when the outcome will happen. Trust that those details are not yours to control.

Once the ash has cooled, you have options. You can release it outside, bury it in soil, or dispose of it with gratitude for the clarity it brought you. You can also save the ashes to release later. I like to save mine and release them at the end of the month to reflect on and close out that chapter.

Always use a heat-safe surface and container and stay present during the process.

How Often Should You Write On Your Bay Leaf?

The frequency is entirely up to you. There are no rules. I burn a bay leaf every morning because it helps set the tone for my day, but that is a practice I built over time. You do not need to start there.

What matters most is the presence and intention you bring to the practice. One bay leaf written with full focus and genuine feeling will always have more impact than ten written while distracted. It is always about quality over quantity.

If you want to make this a consistent habit, try anchoring it to something you already do. Pair it with your morning coffee, a Sunday reset, or the start of a journaling session. When you connect it to an existing routine, it becomes a natural part of your day rather than something extra to remember.

A Small Ritual That Keeps You Aligned

Most people carry their desires in their minds.

They think about what they want while driving, working, or lying awake at night. But without a moment to pause and anchor those thoughts, they often fade into the background of everyday life.

That’s what I love about the bay leaf ritual.

It turns a passing thought into a physical act of intention. You write your desire down, hold it in your hands, and release it. That small moment creates clarity and reminds you to stay connected to the life you’re building.

If this practice resonated with you, the simplest thing you can do is try it for yourself.

I created INTENTION // Bay Leaves using large, full leaves that are smooth and easy to write on so the ritual feels just as intentional as the words you place on them.

You can explore them here: INTENTION // Bay Leaves

Sometimes the smallest rituals are the ones that keep you aligned with the biggest dreams.
