Setting intentions is how you tell the universe how you want to be, live, and show up in the world. Intentions direct your energy towards what YOU want for YOUR life.

However, intentions are not materialistic. They are deeper than that. An intention speaks from your soul and focuses on your purpose in life.

Why Setting Intentions Are Important?

Setting intentions gives you direction and a purpose.

For example, if you were riding on a bike without a set destination, you would eventually become lost and confused. You wouldn’t be prepared for any bumps in the road because you wouldn’t know where you are going.

Similarly, life is the same way.

One day you can be living life and the next day look up and not recognize where you are or how you got there.

Going through life without a set destination is more harmful than it is good.

When you practice setting intentions, you are giving the universe permission to show up in your life and give you what you want.

You are taking back control and playing an active role in creating your own path.

How To Choose Your Intention

The best way to figure out what type of intention to set is to ask yourself questions.

If you are setting intentions for the day, ask yourself this question:

“What is it that I mentally need for me to have a good day today?”

Setting your intentions

Sit with that question and really think about what you need.

The answer that you come up with would be your intention for the day.

The good thing is, intentions can be set for any time frame. So you could set intentions for the day, month or year.

Here are some more questions you can ask yourself to assist you in setting your intentions:

What is it that my body needs for me to be healthy (input time)

If the answer was to drink more water, your intention could be to “hydrate and replenish my body.”

What is it that I need emotionally for me to have a good (day, month, or year)

If your answer was to stop focusing on other people, your intention could be to “focus on myself first.”

What is holding me back from achieving my goals (input timeframe)

If your answer was to stop procrastinating, your intention could be to “spend time more wisely.”

When To Set intentions

Set your intentions when you are grounded and have a clear mind. This could be right when you wake up, after meditating, or doing yoga.

If you are just starting off with intention setting, practice setting them at the beginning of the day or the week.

Once you get the hang of setting intentions, you can start implementing them in your daily tasks and throughout the day.

For example, before walking into a meeting, you could set an intention to be transparent. Or if you were going to call a friend, you could set an intention to be supportive.

It’s all about being clear on how you want things to go in any situation.

How To Set Your Intentions

There are many different ways to set your intentions.

It could be as simple as waking up and thinking about what you want your intention to be for the day or you could create a morning ritual.

If you like rituals like me, here are seven steps you can take to set your intentions in the morning.

  1. Light a candle.
  2. Ground yourself by clearing your mind by meditating.
  3. Take a piece of paper and specifically write down 3 things you currently have that you are grateful for.
  4. Write down what your intention is for the day using the examples above.
  5. Visualize yourself living in the intention.
  6. Blow out your candle and release it to the universe.
  7. Take your intention and carry it with you throughout the day as a reminder to live in your truth.
